East Devon Art Academy benefits from a light, spacious studio with high ceilings. The studio can comfortably accommodate up to 20 students, although classes are smaller than this so there is plenty of space for everyone.
The Academy is situated in an Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty, two minutes walk from the sea. We are placed in the heart of Sidmouth, a small town which is often described as the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the East Devon coast.
The coastal scenery is truly spectacular and there are many wonderful locations in which to paint. In summer there is a small Hopper bus which takes you up to Peak Hill or Salcombe Hill where the views are simply breathtaking.
Opportunities will be taken on longer courses to go out on location, to sketch, paint or collect other resource material. This will be dependent on individual's needs and the weather!
For more information about Sidmouth, please go to www.sidmouth.gov.uk www.worldheritagecoast.net or for a virtual tour of Sidmouth please go to www.vrsidmouth.co.uk
There is a very well stocked art shop called South West Art directly opposite the Academy. If you run out of your favourite paint, they are sure to have it. If you wish to order supplies to collect during your course, please contact them on 01395 516284 info@southwestartmaterials.co.uk
The studio is equipped with easels, tables, drawing boards, drawing and painting equipment, all provided for you to use during your course.
All sketching materials are provided, for example, pencils, charcoal, conté and sketching paper.
Painting materials are provided for the mixed media courses. For other courses, please bring your own materials and favourite brushes, or order them from South West Art for collection. If this is difficult, please let us know and materials can be provided at an extra charge.
When The Academy is not being used for teaching purposes, it is available as an 'Open Studio'. The Open Studio facility is based on the traditional French Atelier system. It gives artists open access to a studio, where they may work from a model if they wish.
The Open Studio facility gives artists of all levels an opportunity to have the use of a large studio space, extended painting time and a chance to mix with like minded individuals. There are tea/coffee facilities and a small 'lounge' area with art books to browse. A life model will be booked when required.
Please contact us if you are interested in using this facility.
There are plenty of car parks near The Academy. The nearest long stay car park is on the seafront. Please note that parking is free in most car parks and in the streets after 6pm. In the streets, parking is free all day Sundays.
If you want to avoid parking charges in the daytime, there is free street parking 5 - 10 minutes walk away.
Nearby Mill Street and Riverside Road, to the west of The Academy, have free parking. These roads are around five minutes walk from The Academy.
Glen Road is east of The Academy and also has free parking areas. Nearby Cotmaton Road, Bickwell Valley and Convent Road all have areas of free parking.
